Footage description: The Anglican clergy were outraged by what they thought was an attack on their Religion. The Scottish response was more moderate. Dr. Tony Lentin suggests that the Anglican clergy, in taking up their pens in defence of Religion, were inspired by temporal as well as spiritual motives and that their attack on Gibbon could, and did, lead to preferment, or promotion. The programme is based on contemporary writings.
