The rise of the jazz composer in the 1920s is traced by Richard Middleton through the analysis of two classics of early jazz: Jelly Roll Morton and the Red Hot Peppers, Black Bottom Stomp and Duke ...Ellington's Old Man Blues. For the purposes of analysis these two pieces have been transcribed and recreated by the Keith Nichols Band.
