Description
In the period from c.1910-30, Stravinsky's musical style, from the harmonic and melodic point of view, underwent a number of changes. Starting from the Debussy/Rimsky-Korsakov mix of The Firebird, ...he proceeded through a period of popular Russian influence to one that incorporated jazz and Baroque dance music, Pergolesi and Tchaikovsky. But finding the right sound medium was always a major preoccupation: sometimes, as with les Noces, this search took more than a decade. Frequently, the result was an unorthodox assembly of instruments. Always, this assembly enables the listener to hear prescisely what is going on, and in particular Stravinsky's rhythmic games.
