Description
In 1886, Ibsen wrote the play 'Rosmersholm. In 1916 Freud published an essay about this play, interpreting the actions of the main character, Rebecca, in terms of the Oedipus complex, and in partic...ular being due to guilt springing from the discovery of her own incestuous relationship with her father, whom she had thought was likely her guardian. Freud found Ibsen's imaginative creations perfectly susceptible to understanding in terms of psychoanalytic theory. This programme discusses both the play "Rosmersholm" and the second television programme for this course, "Dreamwork" is based both on Rosmersholm and the writings of Freud. Some of the ideas lying behind certain developments in these works. Such as whether or not it is possible to escape from the effects of past actions considered from various points of view.
