Description
How far in fact do children of different social backgrounds live in entirely different worlds, worlds in which their approach to learning, and hence often their educational progress is dominated by... the influence of their social class? This programme looks at the elaborated and restricted language codes which broadly, are those used by the middle and working-class people respectively. Long extracts from the discussions of two groups of children, in one case children of factory workers, in the other, children of university lecturers are presented and then analysed by Victor Lee. Some of the implications of the differences which emerge from this analysis are then considered.
