Description
Children's understanding of the concept of number has been studied by various well-known psychologists from Binet in the late nineteenth century through Piaget in the twentieth, up to numerous cont...emporary workers, prominent among whom is Dr. Peter Bryant, who presents this programme. He has been responsible for research which seems to indicate that the apparent inability of young children to grasp the conservation of number, the subject of a famous demonstration by Piaget, is not a true inability, but the conflict of reasonable judgements about length and number. By altering the design of the sequence of tasks given to children to explore s, their true abilities are revealed, and these include, even at the ages of three and four, an understanding of number conservation.
