Description
This is the first of 2 programmes which takes as their starting point the 1976 proposed reform of the French Universities. The aim of the reform of the "second cycle" was to bring the uni...versities in line with the requirements of industry. But this met with an unprecedented opposing alliance of students, staff and principals. Half the country's universities went on strike and fierce street battles were waged. The academic establishment saw the proposed reform as a threat to intellectual freedom. The left saw it as giving the capitalists still further control. The programmes do not examine the details of the reform but focus on the reactions provoked by it which expressed general views about the relationship between education and society. This was chosen as a case-study because' attitudes and opinions which are often merely latent in our system were brought out into the open and forcefully articulated in the French, crisis.
