Description
Institutions of higher education in Britain are famous for their autonomy. But recently this has seemed threatened as financial cuts imposed by the Government have resulted in the universities and ...colleges having to merge departments, lose staff, reduce student intake and cut courses, all against their will. The University Grants Committee has traditionally been regarded as a buffer between the government of the day and the universities. The non-university sector, at least in England, has a newly formed body called the National Advisory Body which could be seen as being equivalent in its function to the U.G.C. The question is: are these bodies acting in the interest of higher education, or are they merely tools of the Government?
