Description
More than half the staff of most polytechnics and other institutes of higher education are non— academic staff, and this large army, ranging from librarians and laboratory technicians through adm...inistrators and secretaries to maintenance workers, porters, cleaners and gardeners, come under the jurisdiction of the aptly-named Chief Administrative Officer. This person's salary status and job prospects have been, until recently, relatively modest. But there is a move afoot to make the work of academic administration more professional. The particular circumstances of the mid-1980s are conducive: academics, under pressure from increased staff/student ratios, have less time to deal with their own administration than previously, and the increasing involvement of national bodies in the affairs of Local Education Authorities makes work which administrators are ideally suited to.
