Footage description: Michael Bartholomew talks to course tutor Dr Anne McDermott, at Birmingham University, about her special project on Dr Johnson's dictionary. She tells how Johnson spent most of his working life on updating and improving the dictionary and that many editions of it exist. In addition to which there are manuscript materials in which Johnson incorporated lots of changes to the text. Dr McDermott also looks at comparisons between Diderot and Johnson and Johnson's prejudice against Gibbon and Hume for their unorthodoxy.
