Description
The trumpeter John Wallace, who was on the jury for the 1994 BBC Young Musician of the Year, talks to Trevor Herbert of the Open University about music competitions. Should teenage musicians be sub...jected to the pressures of a televised competition? What has music to do with competition at all? Are the skills of a competitor different from the skills of a musician? Is it art, or is it sport? The discussion is interspersed with archive contributions by the violinist Joseph Szigeti pianist Peter Donahoe (joint winner of the 1982 Tchiakovsky Piano Competition) Roy Tipping, and the violinist Yfrah Neaman. The programme also includes extracts from the final performances by the winner and runner-up in the 1994 Young Musician of the Year, Natalie Clein (cello) and Colin Currie (percussion), and recordings of performances by John Wallace, Peter Donahoe, and Emma Johnson (winner of the 1984 Young Musician of the Year).
