Description
In the mid-nineteenth century the Bessemer process for making cheap steel revitalised industrial growth which had hit a bottle-neck in the production of malleable iron. The making of cheap steel ma...rked the beginning of the modern world through developments such as the steel framed sky-scraper. Henry Bessemer is the acknowledged inventor of the process which bore his name and made his fortune. But we discover that behind Bessemer's success lay other key innovators who were not so fortunate, including the ill-fated Robert Mushet who long fought for a share of rights to no avail. In the last ten minutes Peter Jones speaks to OU metallurgist Ken Reynolds about current trends in material science.
