Why aren't girls taking up careers in science and engineering? Talking to girls at school and their teachers, they certainly aren't lacking in ability - often examination results show that girls ar...e achieving higher grades than boys. So what can be done to actually encourage girls? Kate Bellingham looks at the various options - one being positive discrimination - schemes such as the 'Women in Science and Engineering initiative' which sends WISE buses into schools, allowing girls to carry out various technological projects on their own, without interference from boys. But not everybody feels happy with positive discrimination, including the girls themselves. So another way of encouragement is through the use of role models, either by ensuring that there are female science and technology teachers within the school environment or taking girls out of school to talk to young women who are studying the sciences or working in the industry.
