Footage description: | Side 1. The audio cassette consists of 3 discussions by 4 course team members about continental influences on England between 1450-1600. Band 1: Zurich letters: Two letters, one from Archbishop Cranmer to Martin Bucer and one from John Jewel to Henry Builinger are read. Students are asked to think about the influence of continental reformers on England. The discussion then concentrates on both religion and politics in England and how events on the Continent affect it. BAND 2: Architecture: The students look at illustrations of a building by Palladio and Hardwick Hall in their discussion of the influence of Palladio on Smythson, the most likely builder of Hardwick Hall. BAND 3: Music: Ave Verum Corpus by Byrd is played. Students think of it in comparison to Italian Madrigals. Discussion follows, pointing out that not everything in England was influenced by the Continent. -- Side 2. A review of three topics studied in A205: a) Religious reform (Rosemary O'Day) b) Magic (Stuart Brown) c) Popular Culture (Rosemary O'Day) Review includes questions for students with suggested answers and guidance on the A205 chart. | ||||||
