Description
Franklin Rosemont, author/editor of one of "the most recent works' on Andre Breton and Surrealism, and himself a dedicated Surrealist, tries to redefine what Surrealism was and still is, in te...rms of its revolutionary nature, rather than its artistic one. He argues that the tern Surrealism has been misappropriated by certain critics and artists- who use it to describe an artistic style, and that this is part of a wider process of social and political manipulation. Essentially Rosemont sees Surrealism, and its founder Andre Breton, as social revolution daries. Rather than using the adjective 'surrealist' to describe a particular style Rosemont instead points to the variety of styles adopted.by those he defines as surrealists. He also deals with Breton's involvement with Leon Trotsky and their Joint production in 1938of the Manifesto -towards a Free Revolutionary Art.
