Description
Analysing a species: Homo floresiensis, nicknamed the "Hobbit", caused a worldwide sensation when its discovery was announced last year. It was claimed to be an entirely new species of hu...man. But now there is debate about whether it was something truly different or an ordinary human with a disease after all. How far can measurements of cranial capacity and thigh bones tell us about the essentials of our species? Flexi-time: It is often argued that flexible working could attract many more people back to work who are put off by a full time commitment. But would it really lead to a net increase in labour supply? In areas of the NHS, for example where the policy is now actively promoted, could staff shortages be made worse? Learning to count: It has been argued that babies as young as five months have a sense of number. But how do we measure what they know? The claim has recently come under attack because of the difficulty of interpreting experimental evidence.
