BBC Radio 3's The Essay strand explores the origins of Western culture. Greek and Latin voices is for all listeners who want to know more about the literature which underpins Western civilisation. ...Each week, in four lively, accessible and highly illustrated nightly programmes, a combination of scholars, writers and passionate classicists of every persuasion, explore various aspects of the author in question. 1) Maria Wyke examines the work of the independent-minded Roman historian Tacitus, focusing on Annals, his most famous surviving work. 2) Classics lecturer Ellen O'Gorman discusses Tacitus's skill at character portrayal. 3) Andy Martin, a writer and French lecturer at Cambridge University assesses Tacitus' influence on writers like Racine and political figures like Napoleon. 4) Rhiannon Ash, Lecturer in Latin and Greek at Oxford University, asks whether Tacitus is still worth reading today.
