Description
Based on the uncompleted villa for Count Francesco and Ludovico Trissino at Meledo, the programme assesses different levels of idealism in Palladio's work. How are we intended to read the descripti...ons and illustrations of Palladio's buildings in the Four Books of Architecture? To what extent are they to be seen as idealised abstractions of what could actually be constructed? To what extent does this level of abstraction reflect another level of idealism in Palladio's conception of his buildings? We will answer these questions by looking at Palladio's use of different kinds of antique architecture for reference, his attempts to interpret and, where necessary correct, Vitruvius, and his development of types which synthesise what he has learnt from both and combine this with his practical experience.
