Description
Side two is introduced by Peter Hamilton, author of Block Three of "Representing the Nation" and introduces extracts from the BBC Radio 3 series transmitted in 1994 called "Documenting Ourselves" presented by Christopher Cook. The first extract is from a programme about the documentary movement in 1930s America. At the time of the Great Depression the Federal Government made attempts to document the lives of ordinary people. Stuart Kidd, a lecturer in American history, describes one such project to depict the lives of small time farmers and their families recorded in the work of photographers commissioned by the Farm Security Administration. The rest of this side of the cassette is the whole of the "Documenting Ourselves" programme about everyday life in 1930s Britian. It features Mass-Observation, founded by Humphrey Jennings, Charles Madge and Tom Harrison, for which volunteers compile a record of the thoughts and daily activities of ordinary people.
