Jennie left secondary school at the age of 18. This was four years later than most of her class mates, who left at 14 – usually to work in the pits or factories. Jennie convinced her parents that she should stay on at school, and they agreed, thinking that she would become a teacher.
Jennie gained a place at the University of Edinburgh and secured a grant to study in the Faculty of Arts.
Jennie left University in 1926 graduating with an MA (Master of Arts), an LLB (Bachelor of Laws) and a Teaching Diploma. Within the Archive we have her teacher training records and notes. You can see a handwritten entry by Jennie in her Teaching Record Book on this page. It is dated 28 March 1924 and includes the day’s lesson plans and notes on the drawing lesson Jennie took which was observed by the College Supervisor.
On this page you can see several of Jennie’s school and university documents, including her leaving certificate from Beath Secondary School dated 1922 and her Teaching certificate following qualification in 1926.
