Clip 6: A simulation of the movement of molecules in a melting solid
Duration: 00:01:55
Date: 1971

In this theme the states of matter: solids, liquids and gases are explored. These clips were all taken from S100 programme 5 “Science course unit 5”

Clip 5 shows a demonstration of oily steel ball-bearings being used to create a simple mechanical simulation of a solid.

Clip 6 shows how a regular array of steel ball-bearings breaks up as the tray containing the ball bearings is agitated from side to side at increased speed. This model corresponds to the melting of a solid as the temperature rises.
