Student L had a good secondary education and was considering going to University after he left school. He was imprisoned in the Official IRA Compounds (the Maze and Long Kesh Prison) in the late 1970s and studied with The Open University gaining a degree in Ancient Early Modern and Modern History. He was the Official IRA Compound Education Officer and responsible for liaising with the prison education department on behalf of the Official IRA prisoners. After his release he continued his studies at postgraduate level with another university.
