Description
Theodore Hook was a composer and writer. He found favour with the Prince Regent and was briefly appointed accountant-general and treasurer of Mauritius from 1813-17 but he was arrested when £12000 was removed from the accounts and was returned to England. Hook lived the life of a playboy and was often in debt. He created the Sunday newspaper 'John Bull'. Hook was known as a practical joker and is famous for receiving the world's first postcard in 1840 which, it is believed, he mailed to himself. In Thackeray's novels 'Vanity Fair' and 'Pendennis' the character of Mr Wagg, a journalist, is based on Theodore Hook.
