Alan Carr worked as an administrator with The Open University from 1975 until 2012. He was National President of the Association of University Teachers (AUT) from 1999 - 2001 then National Treasurer of AUT and of its successor Union the University and College Union (UCU) from 2002 – 2013. He graduated in History from Ulster University and worked as a part-time teacher in the Compounds of the Maze and Long Kesh Prison from 1975 to 1976 teaching Irish History in the Official IRA Compound.
