Michael Atcheson attended Dunlambert Secondary School in Belfast and left at age 15 with no qualifications. He was imprisoned in 1978 in the H blocks (the Maze and Long Kesh Prison) studied for O-levels in 1980-81 and then A-levels and Arts and Technology courses with The Open University 1982-1987. After his release in 1988 he worked in the community work sector and at the same time studied for a Diploma in Community Education at the University of Ulster and Managing Voluntary and Non Profit Organisations with The Open University. He then studied for a degree in Community Development at the University of Ulster graduating in 2012 with a Fi...rst class honours degree.
