Description
George Peabody was an American financier and philanthropist. He moved to London from Massachusetts in 1837 and worked in banking, eventually founding Peabody, Morgan & Co with Junius Spencer Morgan which changed to J. P. Morgan & Co on his retirement in 1864. In later life Peabody was renowned for his philanthropy, founding educational establishments in the United States and housing for the poor in Britain. As a result he was greatly admired by many including William Ewart Gladstone, and was awarded honours, including the Congressional Gold Medal and Freeman of the City of London.
