Description
Lord John Russell was a British Whig and later Liberal politician. He served two terms as Prime Minister in the mid-nineteenth century and also served in the cabinets of several Prime Ministers, including Lord Melbourne and Viscount Palmerston. Despite his aristocratic roots, Russell was a believer in electoral reform and supported the 1832 Reform Act which introduced major changes to the electoral system. He was Prime Minister during the Irish Famine in the 1840s during which his government failed completely in its response to the suffering and death that it caused. With Viscount Palmerston Russell co-founded the Liberal Party in 1859.
