Description
Anthony Ashley-Cooper, the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, was a British Tory politician, philanthropist and social reformer. As a politician he spent many years working to improve the care of the insane in asylums. He introduced an act which ensured that children working in textile industries were aged nine and above, and supported reducing the number of hours employees worked, which eventually led to the Ten Hours Act passed in in 1847. He also did much to prohibit the employment of women and children in coal mines and boys working as chimney sweeps.
