Description
Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, was one of the leading military and political figures during the first half of the nineteenth century. His victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 brought an end to the Napoleonic Wars which had begun in 1803. After the wars he entered politics and in 1828 he became Prime Minister and also served as leader of the Conservative Party in the House of Lords for almost twenty years. Following his death at the age of 83 in 1852, Wellington was given a state funeral.
