Richard Cobden was an English manufacturer and a Liberal MP. In 1838 he founded the Anti-Corn Law League with John Bright which they set up in order to abolish the Corn Laws (tariffs and other trade restrictions which were seen to profit landowners). Along with French statesman Michel Chevalier, Richard Cobden and John Bright also created the Cobden-Chevalier Treaty of 1860 which promoted closer free trade deals with France.
