Description
William Ewart Gladstone was a British statesman and Liberal politician who became Prime Minister, serving a total of 12 years in the position during four terms of office between 1868 and 1894. He was popular amongst the working classes but was opposed to the abolition of slavery - his father John Gladstone was one of the largest slave owners in the British Empire. Gladstone proposed home rule for Ireland but the bill was first defeated in the Commons in 1886 and then in the Lords seven years later.
