Description
William Howitt was an historian who wrote many books on history and other themes such as nature. He and his wife Mary were friends of Elizabeth Gaskell and her husband. The couple lived for a time in Germany and Austria and in later life they spent their winters in Italy. William Howitt also spent two years living in Australia. The couple became interested in spiritualism and in addition to his own writing William translated books from German including 'The History of Magic' by Joseph Ennemoser in 1854.
