Description
Oliver Wendell Holmes was an American physician and poet. He was from Boston and much of his writing was associated with the area. He belonged to a group of poets known as the Fireside Poets who were associated with New England and included Longfellow and Whittier. Holmes embarked on a medical career although he had begun writing poetry at the age of 21. He held the position of Professor at Harvard Medical School for 35 years.

He argues about making changes to suit the British reader especially in having to omit the preface. The book was published by Sampson Low and Marston in October 1867 with preface intact. in 1868 Low brought a court case against Ward & Company for publishing the book more cheaply and won.
