Description
The theme of the programme is how can a lot of people, in a lot of cars, continue to visit and enjoy the New Forest without destroying its character? Donn Small of the Forestry Commission, Deputy S...urveyor of the New Forest, discusses the decision to disperse traffic in the forest, and describes how the areas for car parks, caravans etc. were selected to cause least damage to the various interests concerned with the forest:- forestry itself, grazing, nature conservancy and aesthetic or landscape value. He explains how each part of the forest was graded in terms of the vulnerability of each of the interests concerned and tells how the forestry values were arrived at. Dr R.C.L. Wilson of the O.U., who introduces the programme explains how the value of the land for grazing was assessed. Colin Tubbs of the Nature Conservancy filmed in the New Forest describeshow he graded different parts of the Forest on its ecological value. Robin Bryer, of Hampshire County Council Planning Department, also in the New Forest, discusses the difficulties he faced in assessing the aesthetic value of the forest. Mr Small then describes how these values were put together so that the areas of greatest value and vulnerability would be those kept most free from the pressure of cars and camping, but also so that decent camping places and car parks could be sited in acceptable places where they would do least damage.
