Description
In this programme Professor Brooman brings the supply and Demand sides of the previous programmes together to explain the idea of equilibrium in a market. Having done that he goes on to consider wh...at might happen if the demand curve and supply curve then shift position, and what happens in cases of steep and shallow curves. He finishes with an example of the Chancellor of the Exchequer deciding to tax two different goods and the effect of the price rise on both the demand for the good, and on tax revenue.

Footage description: Brooman shows the demand and supply curves on separate graphs. They are then combined on a single graph. The intersection of the curves is position of equilibrium or the Equilibrium Level. The position of equilibrium on this graph is plotted at lOp. per 15O units. Brooman explains how equilibrium is achieved and what the pressures are that tend to force equilibrium. The effect on equilibrium of changes in the demand curve up by Brooman with aid of a graph. The effect on equilibrium of changes in the supply curve is taken up with the aid of a graph. Brooman also discusses changes in the angles of the demand and supply curves and their effects. A hypothetical case of indirect taxation on a firms product is taken up as an example. The effects are shown on a graph. Brooman briefly takes up the effect of changes in equilibrium on the general market and then previews the next unit
