Description
The speakers in this programme are Aaron Scharf, professor of art history, and Brian Stone, reader in literature, who introduces the programme. They take a single subject, the myth of Leda and the ...Swan and compare its treatment in poetry and art. There is a brief resume of the myth and then Brian Stone reads and analyses W.B. Yeats' poen "Leda and the Swan" comparing it with paintings of the sane subject. Aaron Scharf talks about the wash drawing of Leda by Gericault and draws an analogy between the mood of painting and poem - the essence of a moment. He goes on to analyse the way in which Gericault achieves his effect. The programme ends with a short discussion between Brian Stone and Aaron Scharf on unity and rhythm in art and literature, with particular reference to Yeats and Gericault.
