This programme is similar to the television programme in Unit 25 and those taking part are Professor Vesey and the same group of students. It is a spontaneous philosophical discussion about the mea...ning of "action". It includes studio demonstrations and demands audience participation. It is also closely related to the correspondence material but will stand by itself. This is suitable for beginners in philosophy and for those students in sixth forms and in universities who would like to have some idea of what philosophy is all about.

The student's describe the movement and perform them. Godfrey Vesey demonstrates further arm action, with arm outstretched horizontally and the wand motionless parallel with floor, the elbow is rotated though 90 degrees. The student asked to imitate the action and fails. Vesey asks for the student's reasons for this failure to be noted down. Discussion of answers for student failing to perform the arm movement satisfactory. Vesey brings answers round to will and introduces 'Match-box willing experiment'. Discussion of what 'willing' means. Godfrey Vesey summarises relevance of the experiments to Descartes and points up the object of the programmes which was to give some reasons for doubting Descartes 'volition theory of action'. |
