Footage description: Peter Chapman is shown apparently playing a clarinet. Pan to Gary Alexander who is actually producing the sound on an electronic organ. Peter shows, using an oscilloscope, how the sounds are produced and demonstrates one of the sound generators. Using a model, Peter demonstrates the resonance of a series RLC circuit together with the effect of varying the signal frequency in RL and RC circuits. Using diagrams, oscilloscope and a circuit, Gary discusses properties of sine waves and shows what happens when two sine waves of identical frequency but differing phase and amplitude are added. Gary explains the importance of the phasor, using a computer film. Peter demonstrates the variation of impedance of a resonant RLC circuit when the frequency is changed. Gary at the organ shows how a simple filter circuit can be tuned to accept only harmonics of a pure sine wave so as to filter out a single frequency from the complex clarinet waveform. Credits over Gary playing organ and Peter faking clarinet.
