Description
Shots show the physiological reaction of a female test subject to the sound of a gun discharge being measured. Bob Green introduces an experiment which measures physiological response to stimuli in... rats (Open Field Test). Shots of the 'Open Field Test' experiment. Rat is placed in a central place in a hostile environment. Movements from the central place and other actions are monitored by an observer. Commentary by Bob Green explains the experiment. Bob Green lists some drawbacks of this type of experiment. He introduces the 'Shuttle box' experiment as an example of an improved test of physiological response to emotional and other stimuli. Shots of the 'Shuttle box' experiment. Reactions of a rat are tested. Commentary by Green explains the experiment, Green sums up the experiment emotional stimulus. Shots of a female subject undergoing a Hess box test for response to emotional stimuli. Commentary by Green explains the procedure and apparatus. Green introduces the next experiment. Film sequence shows Frank Bourke preparing a subject for a polygraph test for physiological response to emotional stimuli. The test is conducted. Respiration, blood volume, psycho galvanic skin response, etc. are recorded on the polygraph. (The experiment was performed at the Institute of Psychiatry, South London.) Green sums up the above experiment and explains how computers can make a more objective analysis of the polygraph data. Green then begins a discussion of 'lie detection' procedure. He simulates part of this procedure with help from a female subject. Green describes some of the drawbacks of 'lie detection' procedure. He demonstrates some of these in the next experiment. Shots of an experiment in which the subject consciously alters his autonomic response. In this case blood pressure is lowered in the subject just by having him think about it.
