Description
This colour film is a cast study of the Gower Coast. An ainination of the geology and biology of the Oxwich Bay area is designed to illustrate the material discussed in the course text. Dr. R.C.L. ...Wilson demonstrates the relationship between geological structure and topography. Dr. M.E. Varley looks at the distribution of organisms on the rocky and sandy shores of Oxwich Bay.

Footage description: Map of England and Wales. Camera zooms to the Gower Coast of Wales. Commentary by Wilson gives the terrain features of this part of the coast. Shot of the coastline at the south end of Oxwich Bay. Varley and Wilson are climbing up a rocky slope towards the camera. Wilson points out several geological features around the bay and these are shown on a geological map of the area. Shots of several geological features and cross section diagrams aid the commentary. Peggy Varley at high tide level. She points out vegetation above her and patches of yellow lichen near her. She then points out large patches of lichen below her. Peggy Varley next looks at the distribution of organisms on the shore. She points out various species of seaweed on the rocks. Varley examines some of the animal life on the rocks. Shots of barnacles, periwinkles, a limpet. Varley examines rocks nearer the shore. She points out seaweeds and animal life. Shot, of anemone, hermit crab, shrimp, etc. Varley in the candleweed zone \/ery near the shore. She points out the various sea weeds and animal life. Peogy Varley and Chris Wilson examine the animal life found in the sandy beach. Shots of sandmason worm . Varley discusses the worm's lifestyle. Wilson and Varley dig up a heart urchin. Varley shows and describes the creature. Wilson and Varley dig up a razorshell. Varley shows and describes this creature. Shots of razorshell burying itself in the sand. Varley and Wilson sieve samples of sand to isolate smaller animals living there. Varley picks out a venus clam, a razorshell, a masked crab. Varley and Wilson sample the sand further up the beach in an area where many worm casts are seen. Varley sieves a sand sample and isolates several forms of animal life. Cockles are most abundant here. There is a great deal of debris from other shells. Varley points out the vegetation found among the sand dunes, mainly grasses. Varley and Wilson go inland from the dunes and examine the vegetation there. Shots of ferns bracken and then reeds growing in a fresh water pool. Wilson points out a "blower" in the sand dunes. He explains how this came about.
