Description
This programme uses a documentary approach to compare the social class position and values of two contrasting occupations - train drivers and architects. It shows several drivers and a London archi...tect at work and talking about their work. Students are expected to relate what they observe in this programme to their own reading on social class.

He describes the changes in relationships within the industry, the pay differentials etc. caused by the introduction of diesels. Bartlett describes a school extension she worked on, the design problems she met and how she overcame them. Shots of children in the school, the exterior design of the extension and certain special inside features. Shot of diesel multiple unit entering and leaving St. Austell station. Bryant describes the loss of importance felt on the railways. It's no longer anything special. Multiple unit crossing bridges, inc. Saltash Bridge over River Tamar. Bartlett and Shepherd discuss a contract under consideration. She describes her feelings of independence in her job, her thoughts on developers and her actual position in the building world where she is beginning to be able to pick and choose the jobs she likes. Shots of engine being hosed down, inspected and maintained. Interior of engine driver's mess. Reeling of status loss is described and above all the loss of job security. Job becomes a way of life. Shots of special one-off design Bartlett did for private customer, where she did what she wanted. Front, back and side views etc. Interior views of rooms. She and Chris Taylor discuss a smoke leak in the design and how it can be rectified. More shots of staircases, ceiling etc. Views of White checking his engine. Dials inside the cab. The engine is driven slowly through an engine wash. He describes the loss of job satisfaction, no pride left in his machine. Shots of Bartlett at her drawing board, followed by a train passing at speed. This runs into the credits.
