Footage description: In front of montage of documents concerning Gutenberg, Arthur Marwick sets out to validate Gutehberg's claim to be the first to print with movable type. With the aid of an animated map Arthur Marwick outlines the spread of printing from Mainz until 1500. Arthur Marwick examines techniques similar to that of printing with movable type with which Gutenberg could have been familiar and also the Chinese 'block book' method of printing. Examples are shown. Shots of Mainz (contemporary film) Film inside the Gutenberg Museum showing reconstructed 15th century printing equipment. The processes of printing are shown. 1. type casting 2. composition 3. Printing (including inking). Arthur Marwick runs through the remainder of the operations binding and selling. There are no illustrations of the binding operations.
