Footage description: Film of Faubourg St. Antoine in Paris - its inhabitants, streets etc. Emsley discusses the Sans Culottes. In the Tuileries gardens and the Place de la Concorde Emsley outlines the role of the SansCulottes and the siuation of France in 1793. Contemporary prints accompany Emsley's description. In the studio he outlines France's position and the Hebertist's role. Emsley continues with the history of 1793 describing the Law of Suspects, revolutionary tribunals and the Law of Maximum. The Law of Revolutionary Government is outlined and Emsley describes the situation by the end of 1793. Chagrin, as Desmoulins, reads a speech calling for the end of Terror. The fate of the Hebertists and the Dantonists is outlined. Emsley comments on the Republic of Virtue. Wynne, as Robespierre, delivers a speech describing the Republic of Virtue. Emsley describes the events of 1794, such as the Festival of the Supreme Being and the period of the 'Great Terror'. He concludes by describing the demise of Robespierre, and the end of the Terror. Emsley describes three differing interpretations of the courses of the Terror.
