Footage description: Catherine King in the Brancacci Chapel, Florence introduces the programme and describes briefly the frescoes painted by Masaccio, Masolino and Filippo Lippi. Catherine King describes the technique of fresco, Robert Bruce Gardner demonstrates. Catherine King amplifies her comments on fresco, describing the characteristic effects forced upon the painter by the difficulty of the medium. Greater attention is paid to sinopia (underdrawings). The following frescoes are studied; 1. Brancacci chapel, Masaccio 'Tribute money'. 2. Masaccio 'St Peter healing the lame' 3- Giotto (Peruzzi chapel in Santa Croce). 4. Andrea del Castagno 'Trinity with St. Jerome and two saints' Catherine King indicates the problems of 'day work' Details of 'St Peter raising the son of Teofilo'. Catherine King examines the Barai chapel frescoe: painted by Giotto. The presenter now describes the use of perspective in fresco, an aesthetic progress beyond the style of Giotto. Masaccio's 'Trinity' in Santa Maria Novella is examined. Catherine King describes later fresco development's in particular the transfer of design onto wet plaster.
