Footage description: Colin Russell introduces the programme. He demonstrates an armillary sphere. The earliest theories of the universe are reviewed by Colin Russell. A model of the Pythagorean universe is shown Colin Russell now describes, Plato's and Eudoxus' solution to the problem of the planets' motions. Animated film of planet's path is shown, followed by modern photograph of planets' paths. Colin Russell demonstrates the Eudoxan solution. The Aristotelian scheme is briefly reviewed. A model of the Aristotelian universe is demonstrated. The Ptolemaic system is outlined and the general development of astronomical theory down to Copernicus similarly sketched in brief. Animated film demonsrates the complexity of planetary motion, and the attempts to solve it by epicyclic motion. Animated film is also used to demonstrate Ptolemys equant. Drawing of the Ptolemaic system is shown. Colin Russell reviews conflicting and/or heliocentric systems that had opposed the Ptolemaic system. Colin Russell outlines a brief biography of Copernicus and sums up the latters criticism of the ptolemaic systems. The Copernican system is now described in detail. The system is shown in a drawing also in comtemporary drawing at end of sequence.
