Footage description: Dr. Edwards outlines the intention of the programme. Dr. Edwards begins his analysis of the Largo. The original ideas as they appear in Beethoven's sketch books are shown and the notes and themes played by the musicians. The analysis is continued and the beginning played again without a break. (Bars 1-19 inc) Dr Edwards outlines the development of the piece. The trio plays bars 18-27. Dr. Edwards pursues his analysis further, isolating a figure from the music. The trio plays bar 26, then 26-37. The figure is shown in written form. Dr. Edwards continues the analysis of the Largo, outlining its development so far and its further movement in the bars 37-45 The trio plays bars 37-45 after Dr. Edward analysis. Manuscript figures played by the musicians are shown over shots of the players. Dr. Edwards examines the movement and explains its elements by means of an animated diagram. The analysis continues illustrated by the playing of bars 48-53 Dr. Edwards identifies the repetition of bars 9-10 in bars 54-56. Both excerpts are played by the trio. The analysis of the Recapitulation begun in the preceding sequence is continued with a comparison of bars 26-29 and bars 70-75. Both excerpts are played by the trio. Dr. Edward discusses the ending of the movement. Shots of Beethoven's manuscript are shown and the final ending is played after the playing of an alternative but abandoned ending by Beethoven. The diagram of sequence six is completed. Dr. Edwards continues with general comments on the sonata form which is that of the movement. He introduces the final lengthy excerpt from the movement.
