Footage description: Bill Prescott, voice over, introduces the programme by recapping on the previous programme and the guided discovery model. A session recorded in the TV studio laboratory illustrates a fourth teaching strategy: conversational learning. The children use programmed texts on the human body. The teacher gives each child a chart showing the related functions of the body and assists them individually in tracing these relationships. An animated diagram is used to model conversational learning. A secondary biology group collecting specimens on a rocky foreshore. The teacher's strategy, using 'how' and 'why' questions, is conversational learning. Back in the classroom the children work in groups deciding whether sea anemones are plant or animals. The teacher provokes a lively discussion. A second animation shows another model of conversational learning and relates it to the simple processes of guided discovery and problem solving. The final sequence illustrates a fifth strategy, John Merritt takes four groups at different stages in a primary school project. First he works with a group selecting their 'goal'. Classroom scenes. The second group are at the stage of selecting a plan. A third group, out in the playground, are at the implementation stage. The final group, at the development stage, are seen evaluating the pots they have made as their project.
