Footage description: Sequence from 'Health of a nation' (1937) showing welfare activities centred upon the school. Original commentary. Sequence from 'Peace and plenty' (1939) made by Communist Party and showing slum conditions in London. Arthur Marwick assesses the importance of evacuation in the acceleration of social change. Three sequences on evacuation are then shown, the first the departure for the safety zones, the second and third dealing with the children's life in their new homes. Walter Eliot is shown in the third clip. All sequences are newsreel items. Arthur Marwick comments on the preceding sequences and then introduces two further film clips, the first showing Ernest Bevin, the second Archbishop Temple, both radical social reformers. Arthur Marwick introduces newsreel item on the popularisation of ballet. He adds a few comments on the war's effects upon the extension of cultural interests to all classes of society. Film on the manufacture of penicillin is shown. Arthur Marwick comments on the application of science to society and the stimulus given to it by war. Arthur Marwick discusses the potent influence for social change that is represented by the arrival of large numbers of foreign troops in Britain. Sequence from 'Welcome to Britain' is shown, a film for Americans introduced by Burgess Meredith, and introducing to the American the British way of life during war time. Sequence from 'Towards a wealthier Britain' showing Henry Willink announcing plans for the formation of a National Health Service. Newsreel sequence on prefabricated housing. A prefab is shown in detail, rooms, living areas, fittings etc. Arthur Marwick examines briefly the differences between the political parties at the end of the war and introduces film clips showing Attlee and Churchill giving electioneering speeches. Newsreel film of Herbert Morrison is also shown after his election.
