Footage description: Donald Watt reviews the status quo in South East Asia immediately before the Japanese Victories. Clips from the film "Indonesian Ranja" are shown while Donald Watt describes Japan's treatment of the nationalist movements in S.E. Asia after the conquest. The colonial picture of Indonesia is shown in the prewar Dutch film; a clip is shown, Donald Watt commenting over. The clip shown shows the visit of a colonial official to the Sultan of Sambas. Donald Watt outlines Japanese roads to modernisation of Indonesia; film clips are shown, the first showing a propaganda team entertaining in a rural area, the second the meeting of a village co-operative, probably acted documentary. These village communes or tonarigumis are discussed by Donald Watt. The third clip shows military training in the paramilitary nationalist groups set up by the Japanese. Donald Watt describes the position immediately after the surrender of the Japanese in 1945 and shows film of the early days of Sukarno's Indonesian republic Shots of Sukarno. Donald Watt describes the activities and role of the peace keeping forces in the Indonesia in the period up to 1949. Film clips demonstrating his points are shown. Film showing the evacuation and repatriation of Dutch civilians after the war is screened, Donald Watt commenting.
