Footage description: John Merritt introduces the programme which shows a number of reading situations drawn from the world of work. First example shows a mailing room in an engineering factory. Staff are seen opening and sorting mail. Voice over, Merritt asks what reading skills are involved. Production manager at the firm, Trist, Draper Ltd., is seen at his desk opening the morning mail. He comments voice-over on the action he will take on each item. Personnel manager Karl Joskey at his desk consults a two-volume guide to training courses, and explaining the methodology. Shots of the factory floor. A works foreman checks orders against work sheets. A different situation: David Eade, English lecturer, scans a book on Sterne during his lunch break. He then glances through the 'Sun' newspaper. Caretaker Norman Abbott explains how he reads 'The Sun'. A teacher comes to check a room allocation against the caretakers list . Student teacher Caroline Smith scans the 'Times Educational Supplement' for jobs. She then reads her morning mail. Next she is seen talking to Edward Milner (off camera) about reading problems. Finally, shots of a collection of project material being filed by children at Leamside Junior School in Durham, John Merritt comments briefly on the training value of this for the reading situations seen in this programme. Closing shots show a girl selecting material on butterflies.
